Bhadohi – The Carpet City

Bhadohi, a small city in Uttar Pradesh, where carpet weaving is not just an industry, it is a part of the city’s identity.

Carpet weaving in the city dates back to 500years ago during the reign of Emperor Akbar. A bunch of master weavers from Persia had come to India to expand their trade and eventually set up their looms at a place near Bhadohi thus bringing the art to Bhadohi for the first time.

Today, Bhadohi is the biggest centre of carpet making in India, noted not just for the massive quantity in which the carpets are produced but also for their exceptional quality.

The hand knotted carpets in the city are especially popular and are exported all over the country and across the world.

Carpets produced in the region are now Geographically Indicated (GI) under the name ‘Handmade Carpets of Bhadohi’ which has made Bhadohi a brand name in the international carpet market.

Bhadohi is also home to the Indian Institute of Carpet Technology, a one of its kind institution that offers B. Tech courses in carpet and textile technology.

Such has been the impact of the carpet industry on the city’s image that it is now known all over India as the ‘Carpet City’.
