Music of Dharwad

Dharwad occupies a pedestal of eminence in the genre of Hindustani Classical Music, being known amongst music lovers as ‘Line of Actual Control’ of the boundary between Hindustani and Carnatic music forms. It is considered as the southernmost outpost of the Hindustani Classical Music and after which the Carnatic music has its influential territory.

Prominent Gharanas

The region is the epicentre of the Kirana Gharana, which revolutionized Khayal singing style of the Hindustani classical music. A number of styles from the other gharanas can also be found in the city of Dharwad which includesJaipur and the Gwalior Gharanas.Ragas like Todi, Lalit, Multani, Patdeep, Puriya, Marwa, Shuddha Kalyan, Darbari Kanhara, Komal-Rishabh Asavari, etc. are the rhythms on which have seen the improvisation imprints by the Kirana Gharana.

Leading Musicians

The foremost among musicians is Pandit Bhimsen Joshi who has been honoured with a Bharat Ratna. Shri Gangubhai Hangal and Pandit Mallikarjun, both have been recipients of Padmabhushan award. Bande Ali Khan, Pt. Sawai Gandharva, Pt. Sureshbabu Mane were the prominent musicians associated with the region and its Gharanas especially Kirana. The generations following them include Niaz Ahmad Khan-Faiyaz Ahmad Khan duo, Shakoor Khan (Sarangee player) which have upheld the musical identity of the Dharwad district.
