Mandya – The Sugar Bowl of the South

Mandya is home to The Mysore Sugar Company, one of the largest suppliers of processed sugar in India. From homes to sweat-shops to five star hotels, Mandya keeps Karnataka brimming with sweetness.

Located in the heart of the city, the factory was established during the days of the Raj in 1933 by the Maharaja of Mysore, and is one of the oldest sugar factories in the country.

The surrounding land, well irrigated and rich in sugarcane production, quickly made Mandya the centre of the sugar industry in the south.

Originally built with a capacity of 400 tonnes of sugar crushing a day, today the factory processes a massive amount of 5000 metric tons of sugar each day.

And sugar isn’t the only thing produced here. With 36 kilo litres of alcohol distilled every day and a 30 MW bagasse based power generation plant operating at full capacity, the factory is central to Mandya’s economy being a major employer and income generator in the area.

Production goes on 24/7, 365 days a year, making sure that Karnataka never runs out of sweet things to have.
