Men that made Mahendragarh proud!

Mahendragarh in Haryana is home to several renowned Indian personalities across time periods.

Sher Shah Suri (1486-1545), founder of the Sur dynasty, was born at Narnaul near Mahendragarh. A brilliant strategist and warrior, he served under Mughal Emperor Babur and briefly wrested control of the empire before dying in an accident. He was a farsighted administrator and his legacy lives on in India’s currency, the rupee, the country’s first postal system and the Grand Trunk road stretching from East to North-West across the subcontinent.

Raja Rao Tula Ram (1825-1863) played a key role in the Indian Mutiny of 1857. During the Mutiny, he succeeded in virtually obliterating British rule in parts of Haryana. Later, he travelled extensively outside India, seeking help for the fledgling freedom movement from the rulers of Russia, Iran and Afghanistan. He died at the young age of 38.

Among contemporary notables, Baba Ramdev is a nationally known yoga guru. He shot to fame in the early 21st century when Aastha TV began broadcasting his morning yoga routines. Today, he has an enormous following and counts many celebrities among his disciples. Baba Ramdev founded Patanjali Yogpeeth to promote yoga and ayurveda worldwide.

Mahendragarh’s famous personalities have contributed to the nation in varied walks of life.
