It was the Darji community Of Maharashtra that actually gave rise to the garment industry. They moved on to Bellary to stitch uniforms for Indian soldiers in the British army. Located close to the borders of Maharshatra, Bellary was where they set their roots.
Their stitching skills were popular even after the end of the First World War. Today, a number of denim manufacturing companies like Walter and Podium operate out of Bellary. The nearby cotton mills and plantations only add to the flourishing garment business here. This is why garment products like the Ikal silk sarees are popular across the country. According to statistics, more than 25% of Bellary residents work in the garment industry.
