The chaiwalas have given us an area limit, up to where they can deliver chai on their bicycles, that is where we have drawn our boundaries for now
Zepo, an e-commerce platform that help provide small businesses in India with an online medium to set shop, has come up with an innovative online chai delivery system called ChotuChaiWala.com. Those interested, can buy a weekly, fortnightly or monthly subscription for chai on the website, and one cup of chai, everyday from Monday to Friday, will be delivered to the address provided.
Currently, ChotuChaiWala.com has tied up with five chaiwalas in Bandra, at Waterfield Road, Linking Road, National College, Hill Road and Bandra Post Office. “We chose Bandra because it is a place where a lot of businesses come together. But we wish to go pan-Mumbai in the near future,” said Tanya Rao, marketing manager at Zepo, who is currently managing the campaign. “It is an attempt to bring in some organisation in the unorganised sector; the most popular ones in Mumbai being the chaiwalas and the vada pav walas,” added Rao.
The website uses the subscription model, where the vendor can buy a monthly or yearly subscription to feature on the site. The chaiwalas, currently selling on the website, have opted for a basic monthly plan, costing Rs 1,000. Four of the five vendors came together, contributing Rs 250 each and opened one online store. Currently, most of their customers are individuals. “We got a corporate order from an office in Nariman Point, but we are not in a position to deliver chai there at the moment,” said Rao. The three-week-old website has already got 53 orders. “We are doing quite well. It will hopefully help us rope in chaiwalas from across the city. This may take time, because not all chaiwalas are familiar with the concept of e-commerce. But they are keen on giving this a shot, at least the ones we have gotten in touch with. It provides them a chance to expand their business,” said Rao.
ChotuChaiWala.com is currently delivering chai across most of Bandra. “The chaiwalas have given us an area limit, up to where they can deliver chai on their bicycles, that is where we have drawn our boundaries for now,” said Rao. After making ChotuChaiWala.com operational across Mumbai, Zepo plans to set up a similar system for other unorganised sectors in the city like vada pav vendors. They plan to take the businesses online for the convenience of customers as well as help the businesses grow.
