Take a blissful trip to the Mahalxmi Temple in Kolhapur

The 7th century Chalukya Mahalaxmi temple is also called the Ambabai Temple by the localites.

The chief idol is Mahalaxmi and is believed to take care of the peace and tranquility of the temple.

Laxmi is seen with her symbol of power and pride, the lion. Since Laxmi is believed to be incomplete without Vishnu, it is believed that both the God and Goddess live in that area in bliss. The Shakti tradition of Hinduism venerates the power of women and goddesses.

20th and 21st of September and March are the ideal dates to visit the beautiful shrine as the slanting rays of the setting sun through the small window fall directly on the face of the Goddess Laxmi creating a divine sight for the pilgrims. Fridays and full moon days are considered to be special for the devotees as the idol of the goddess is brought out for procession around the temple.
