Dharmendra Ludhiana

Who would’ve ever guessed that Ludhiana (Punjab) has been home to so many famous personalities?

Punjab Kesari (The Lion of Punjab) Lala Lajpat Rai, from Dhudi Ke village near Ludhiana was one of the famed trio of freedom fighters, nicknamed Lal-Bal-Pal ( the other two being Bal Gangadhar Tilak and Bipin Chandra Pal). A great orator and a skilled writer, Indians still proudly narrate his tales!

Dharmendra, from Sahnewal village entertained the Indian cinema lovers for four decades and was voted among the world’s handsomest men in the 1960s.

In the heady days of India’s economic liberalization, Sunil Bharti Mittal was one of the few bidders with the requisite experience in telecom operations. Today, the brand he founded ‘Airtel’ is one of India’s largest brands with an overseas footprint as well.

Brijmohan Lall Munjal is no more, but his Hero cycles and motorbikes, driven across India’s roads make him a nationally known and respected business personality.

Diminutive cricketer Chetan Sharma was never expected to last long in the national team but proved his detractors wrong through a memorable career as a medium pace bowler.

And finally, can anyone forget the emotion-laden lyrics of film songs penned by yesteryear poet Sahir Ludhianvi?

Clearly, there’s something about Ludhiana…
