Famous Names from Dhule

Dhule City in north-western Maharashtra boasts of several famous, accomplished personalities hailing from various walks of life.

Janardan Maharaj Valvi, of tribal descent, was a dedicated social worker who worked towards the uplift of tribal communities. He founded the Satpura Shikshak Prasarak Mandal in 1963, to further the cause of education.

Smita Patil (1955-1986), one of Indian cinema’s finest actors, was one of the leading lights of India’s parallel cinema movement in the 1970s and an ardent proponent of the feminist movement in India. Many of her film roles explored pressing feminist issues. Sadly, this beautiful actor died at 31 due to complications during childbirth.

Raghunath B. Kelkar was Maharashtra’s first cartoonist. Today, his cartoons are on display in several countries.

Dhule-born Ram Vanji Sutar is a sculptor of renown. In 2016, he was awarded the Padma Bhushan by the Government of India. His most recognizable work is a Mahatma Gandhi bust, copies of which have been gifted by the Indian government to several nations.

Dhule is known for supporting and promoting education. It is, therefore, no surprise that the city has given birth to so many eminent people.
