Chennai – The Detroit of India

The capital of India’s automobile industry, Chennai, well deserves the epithet ‘Detroit of India’. Numbers alone do all the talking - factories and plants in and around Chennai manufacture 30% of India’s four wheelers, 35% of its automobile components and account for 60% of the country’s automotive exports.

From personal vehicles like two and four wheelers to commercial buses, lorries and tractors to engines, motor parts and tyres. Chennai’s automotive manufacturing dominates the entire gamut of India’s automotive sector.

113 industrial parks and readily available plots of land together with support and incentives from the Tamil Nadu government has attracted massive foreign investment from major international players.

Every major brand in the sector has production facilities in or near the city. Ford, Chrysler, Daimler, BMW, Nissan, Ashok Leyland, Hyundai, Mitsubishi, Renault, Yamaha, Bridgestone and MRF to name a few.

The presence of a well-established software and IT industry in the city has further boosted its locational advantages as technological services required for automobile manufacturing are now easily available.

Chennai’s excellent transport infrastructure (both land and air) and its nearness to the sea also make it an idea export destination for heavy goods like automobiles and motor parts.
